************************************************************************ Program - Sara Ott Coleman ND
Sara is the director of the ND Division of Tourism. Tourism is the second largest industry in ND second only to agriculture. The energy industry is creeping close behind tourism. 3.6 billion dollars are spent by out of state people each year. The industry is a lot of fun but it is also big business. NDSU is doing research and the division is using this research data to make decisions for the future. For every 493 people that visit our State we can create 1 new job. If we did not have the tourists coming to our State it would likely cost each household 636 more dollars a year in property taxes to make up the difference. Domestic travel does not spike in the summer, contrary to popular belief. A lot of marketing has been focused on specific interests that draw people to our State. Mountain biking, birding, RVing, and golfing are amount the list. All four seasons in ND have a lot to offer tourists depending on their interests and needs. The tourism industry is up 17% from 2001 and all research show growth. The way that marketing is done has changed a lot. Electronic marketing has become huge with 15 E blast categories going out currently. The goal is to get all of the details included in these E blasts to that people get enough information to know who to contact to make plans to spend lots of money in our State. The ND tourism division has been featured on the Today Show and in the NY Times in the travel section. Internationally they are marketing in the Nordic Countries and in Germany. Group travel has changed to RV groups and Harley Davidson groups. The Division tries help customize vacations based on interests and put those people in contact with providers that can make that vacation a success.
With 38 dollars coming back to the community for every 1 dollar spent, this is a very good investment.
